Possible Business Ventures based on the Demography of Tallahassee, Florida
Course: Maps and Graphs
Date: Fall 2020
Type: Graphical presentation and analysis

Background: Tallahassee, Florida being the capital of Florida brings about many questions about what the demography of the city is like. Therefore, in this project my goal was to figure out what the age and gender makeup is for the city to find out what types of new businesses would be the best fit for this city in the upcoming years.
Research Question: What new businesses would be the best fit for the people that live in Tallahassee, Florida based on the demography of the area?
Data: The data for this project is sourced from the 2019 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates Subject Table for Tallahassee. The specific table that this data is sourced from is the S0101 Age and Sex table, which breaks down the total population into age categories and then gender.
Methods: For this project, the data was imported into Microsoft Excel and then used to make a population pyramid graph that compares the ages between females and males by their percentage compared to the total population. For the line graph with markers that compares the total percentage of males vs females, the same process was followed but the data was used to make the line graph with markers in order to clearly show the difference.
Results: Through my research on the demography of Tallahassee, I was able to find that the median age for both males and females is 20 to 24 years old. The population pyramid shows that there is relatively stable percentage across all age groups except for the 20 to 24 group and the 75 plus groups. The spike in the 20 to 24 age group is likely due to the presence of many colleges including Florida State University. The reason for the decrease in the 75 plus age groups is likely to do with the fact that the elderly are moving to cities that are more suited for retired people.
Discussion: According to the population pyramid, the population of Tallahassee seems to be relatively stationary with an increase in the 20 to 24 age group. Since Tallahassee seems to have a population that is centered more on young adults and older teenagers it would make the most sense for them to implement businesses that gear more towards younger people like parks and malls as well as new and trendy businesses that are more popular with people in the young adult age range. The youth centric population also means that there are a lot more people in the city who need work of some kind to support themselves as well as a place to live that doesn’t cost too much. Therefore, retail stores and other businesses like restaurants and new apartment buildings would be the best way to go in a city that is made up of a population like Tallahassee.
